Meet Plutus: Your AI Budget Manager

Meridian Team··5 min read

An AI that manages your money with you, not behind your back.

We spent a long time thinking about AI before we built any of it.

Not because we did not know how. The technology is straightforward. You take financial data, hand it to a large language model, and let it analyze spending patterns and make suggestions. Every fintech company is doing it. Some of them announced it before they even figured out how.

We waited because we wanted to get the relationship right. AI managing your money is intimate. It knows what you buy, where you eat, how much you earn, what you owe. That is not a relationship you rush into.

So we built something different: three tiers, starting with no AI at all.

Tier One: Private Mode

This is the default, and we think that matters.

When you sign up for Meridian, no AI has access to your financial data. Not ours, not anyone else's. Your transactions, categories, balances, and spending patterns exist only on our servers, encrypted and protected. No model trains on them. No algorithm analyzes them to sell you products.

Private Mode is not a stripped-down experience. It is the full budgeting app: envelope budgeting, bank sync, Arsenal debt payoff, credit card handling, scheduled transactions. Everything works without AI. Most of our users may never need anything beyond this.

We believe the default should be privacy, not surveillance.

Tier Two: Bring Your Own AI

If you want AI help but prefer to use your own accounts, Meridian supports the open MCP protocol. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, and it lets AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT connect to external services securely.

Here is what that means in practice: you connect your Claude or ChatGPT account to Meridian, and suddenly your AI assistant can see your budget, answer questions about your spending, categorize transactions, and move money between categories. All through the apps you already use.

This tier is free. We do not charge for the connection because we are not paying for the AI. You bring your own subscription, and Meridian simply opens the door.

The beauty of this approach is flexibility. You use whichever AI you prefer. You can revoke access anytime. And because the connection runs through an industry-standard protocol, your AI assistant gets up-to-date information whenever you ask, without storing anything on its own servers.

Tier Three: Plutus

For people who want AI help without the technical setup, there is Plutus.

Plutus is an AI financial advisor built directly into Meridian. Open the chat panel, ask a question, and Plutus responds with real answers based on your actual financial data. No configuration needed. No separate accounts. Just a conversation about your money.

The name comes from Greek mythology. Plutus was the god of wealth, but we liked it for a different reason: the mythology says he wanted to distribute wealth fairly. That felt right for an AI whose job is helping you use your money wisely.

What Plutus Can Actually Do

Plutus has access to forty-five tools that cover nearly everything in Meridian. But rather than listing tools, here is what a conversation actually looks like.

You might open the chat and say: "I feel like I overspent on dining this month."

Plutus checks your dining category. It sees you have spent $340 out of $400 budgeted, with ten days left in the month. It tells you that, but it also notices you have $85 sitting unused in your clothing category. It suggests moving $50 from clothing to dining to give you breathing room, and it shows you the specific action it wants to take.

Nothing happens until you confirm. A card appears with the details: move $50 from Clothing to Dining Out. You tap Confirm, and the money moves. Or you tap Cancel and adjust the plan yourself. Either way, you are in charge.

Here are some other things Plutus handles:

Categorize transactions. That pile of uncategorized imports from bank sync? Ask Plutus to take a look. It reads the payee names, suggests categories, and waits for your approval on each one.

Analyze spending trends. "How has my grocery spending changed over the last six months?" Plutus pulls the data, calculates the trend, and tells you whether you are spending more, less, or about the same.

Build a budget. New to Meridian? Tell Plutus your income and major expenses, and it can set up categories and assign amounts as a starting point. You refine from there.

Answer questions. "Can I afford a $200 purchase right now?" Plutus checks your unassigned funds and category balances and gives you a straight answer.

Manage debt strategy. Plutus can analyze your Arsenal debt payoff plan, compare strategies, and explain which approach saves the most interest for your specific debts.

The Confirmation Rule

Every action Plutus proposes requires your explicit confirmation before it executes. Every single one.

This is not a setting you can turn off. It is fundamental to how Plutus works. We built it this way because we believe AI should advise, not act autonomously when it comes to your finances.

When Plutus wants to do something, you see exactly what it plans to do, in plain language, before anything changes. If you disagree, say so. Plutus will adjust its suggestion or explain its reasoning. The conversation continues until you are satisfied.

This approach is slower than full automation. We know that. But "my AI accidentally moved $500 to the wrong category" is not a sentence anyone should ever have to say about their budget.

Ten Dollars a Month

Plutus costs ten dollars per month, added on top of your Meridian subscription. We chose this price because it covers our costs with a healthy margin and feels fair for what you get.

Behind the scenes, Plutus runs on Claude, Anthropic's AI. We pay for the API usage, manage the infrastructure, and handle the complexity so you do not have to. No Anthropic account needed. No API keys to manage. Just open the chat and start talking.

Lifetime Meridian members get Plutus included at no extra charge. Because if you believed in us early, we want to keep giving you reasons to be glad you did.

Your Choice, Always

The three tiers are not a ladder. They are options. Some people will stay in Private Mode forever, and we are genuinely happy about that. Some will connect their own Claude account through MCP and love the flexibility. Some will use Plutus daily and wonder how they managed without it.

The point is that you choose. Your financial data is yours. How much of it, if any, you share with AI is entirely your decision. And that decision is reversible at any time.

We built Plutus for the people who want it. We built Private Mode for the people who do not. And we built the MCP tier for the people who want something in between.

Your budget. Your data. Your rules.

Plutus is available now for $10/month as a Meridian add-on. Or connect your own Claude or ChatGPT account for free via MCP. Or use Meridian in Private Mode with no AI at all. [See which option fits you](https://meridianmoney.app).
